Helping schools modernize facilities, reduce costs, and build sustainable learning environments.

At Energia, we partner with school districts to identify strategic opportunities that improve building performance, reduce operating costs, and support long-term sustainability. Through energy performance contracting and comprehensive facility planning, our team helps districts implement impactful upgrades, from renewable energy and lighting improvements to building system enhancements and infrastructure modernization.

By aligning technical expertise with financial strategy, Energia helps schools deliver meaningful energy savings while reinvesting in the environments where students learn and communities thrive.

The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns have officially received approval and permits from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to move forward with their district-wide energy efficiency initiative. The $5.9 million Energy Performance Contract (EPC), developed in partnership with Energia and Ameresco, will implement a range of upgrades across five district buildings, including solar PV installations, LED lighting improvements, building management system enhancements, weatherization, insulation upgrades, and roof replacements. These improvements are projected to reduce the district’s annual energy consumption by approximately 33% while generating more than $264,000 in yearly savings, supporting long-term operational efficiency and sustainability for the community.

Dr. Raymond Sanchez, Superintendent of Public Schools of Tarrytowns and 2025 New York State Superintendent of the Year, shares why he chose Energia to support his district’s energy initiatives.

North Babylon UFSD Advances Energy Efficiency
Through Energy Project

North Babylon Union Free School District (UFSD) partnered with Energia to implement a comprehensive Energy Performance Contract (EPC) aimed at modernizing district facilities and improving long-term operational efficiency.

The project includes a range of energy conservation measures designed to reduce energy consumption, enhance building performance, and support a more sustainable learning environment across the district. By leveraging the EPC model, the district is able to implement critical infrastructure and energy upgrades while using the resulting savings to help fund the improvements.

Construction is now nearing completion, marketing a major milestone in the district’s efforts to modernize facilities while advancing long-term energy and operational goals.

Project Highlights:

  • Project Size: $17.1M
  • Projected Annual Savings: $913K
  • Reduction in Energy Costs: 69%

Energy Conservation Measures:

  • LED Lighting Retrofits
  • Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System
  • HVAC and Control System Modernization
  • Boiler Replacements

What Is Energy Performance Contracting?

Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) is a strategic financing approach that allows school districts to implement critical infrastructure and energy upgrades without requiring upfront capital. Through this model, the cost of improvements, such as lighting upgrades, building management systems, HVAC improvements, and renewable energy installations, is paid for over time using the energy savings the project generates.

As an Owner’s Representative, Energia partners with districts to guide every stage of the EPC process, from identifying opportunities and developing project strategies to coordinating implementation and verifying performance. By aligning engineering expertise with financial strategy, EPC projects help districts modernize facilities, reduce operating costs, and create healthier, more efficient learning environments for students and staff.

Explore an Energy Performance Contracting Success Story

Last week at the Connecticut Association of School Business Officials (CASBO) Timely Topic Workshop, Vince Masciana, Chief Project Officer at Cheshire Public Schools, Kendra McQuilton, CEO at Energia, and Justin Benoit, Director of Project Delivery at Energia, shared how a strategic Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) helped Cheshire Public Schools complete more than $10 million in energy-efficient upgrades while supporting local economic growth and long-term fiscal stability.

The session, How School Infrastructure Investment Creates a Ripple Effect of Economic Growth: An ESPC Success Story with Cheshire Public Schools, features Cheshire Public Schools, offering a firsthand perspective on the community-wide impact of this investment.
