NORTH BABYLON, NY

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The North Babylon UFSD Energy Savings Project is an exciting, transformative initiative poised to revolutionize the district’s approach to energy efficiency, sustainability, and infrastructure modernization—all while safeguarding taxpayer dollars. With a robust investment of $17.1 million through an Energy Performance Contract (EPC), North Babylon is implementing a suite of comprehensive upgrades, including district-wide LED lighting retrofits, a large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) system, and major enhancements to HVAC controls, rooftop units, and boilers. In collaboration with Energia and the Energy Service Company (ESCO) ESG, the district is aiming for project completion by Autumn 2025. Once finalized, these upgrades are expected to generate impressive annual savings and significantly reduce energy costs, allowing North Babylon to reinvest in crucial educational priorities.

HIGHLIGHTS

By strategically utilizing an Energy Performance Contract (EPC), North Babylon UFSD is accomplishing these essential upgrades without raising taxes. This innovative financing model reflects the district’s commitment to environmental stewardship and operational efficiency. With projected annual savings of $913,000 and an astounding 69% reduction in energy costs, North Babylon is fostering a healthier, more sustainable learning environment for students and faculty alike. Moreover, the project ensures budget stability, enabling future investments in education and resources.

This initiative exemplifies how EPC’s can empower school districts to meet critical infrastructure needs without financial strain, positioning North Babylon as a pioneering leader in energy-smart educational practices.

Examples of Energy Conservation Measures:
  • LED Lighting Retrofits: Over 8,900 state-of-the-art LED fixtures installed district-wide, dramatically reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.

  • Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System: The installation of a 3,152 kW solar PV system that harnesses renewable energy, significantly offsetting traditional energy usage.

  • HVAC and Control System Modernization: Comprehensive upgrades to HVAC controls that enhance climate management and energy efficiency, along with the replacement of aging rooftop units.

  • Boiler Replacements: Installation of modern, energy-efficient boilers designed to improve heating efficiency and reliability.
