Town/School District of Cheshire, CT

Cheshire, CT

Project Overview

The Town/School District constructed a self-funding ESPC that funded over $10 million worth of energy efficient upgrades. One of the highlights of the project was a district-wide lighting upgrade to dimmable LED. Additionally, a cost saving oil-to-gas conversion and 18 other measures were implemented that will produce over $600,000/year in guaranteed energy savings. All work was developed and installed at no out-of-pocket cost to the Town

After the success of the energy performance contract, Energia was retained to evaluate other innovative technologies to become more efficient. To date, this has included evaluation of the financials behind a solar power purchase agreement, an evaluation of the return on investment for a proposed LED street lighting project, and continued conversations regarding proper diligence to ensure successful future energy efficiency project outcomes.

Highlights

Complete Electric to Hydronic Heating System Conversion for Highland Elementary School and Portions of the High School

The complete conversion from extremely expensive and inefficient electric heat to the new hydronic heating system, using water to conduct heat, made the overall system simultaneously more effective and less expensive.

At Highland Elementary, replacing rooftop HVAC with units that burn natural gas to heat the building resulted in a huge cost savings.

The district used the cost savings from these heating system conversions to install full air conditioning at Highland Elementary School —- a project that had been on their wish list for many years.

Five Examples of the 20+ Energy Conservation Measures:
  • Building Wide Electric Heat Conversion
  • LED Lighting Upgrades
  • Oil to Gas Conversion
  • Premium Efficiency Motors
  • Water Heating Improvements
