Senior Energy Engineer (Full Time)

Job Description:

The ideal candidate for this position will possess exceptional project management skills, a strong aptitude for field work, and a comprehensive understanding of building systems that impact energy consumption. This role presents an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the sustainability goals of the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) through the execution of highly technical duties and coordination of diverse projects. Additional relevant work assignments may be delegated as necessary.

Location:

Energia is based in Smithtown, New York and performs activities on a hybrid work schedule. This role will primarily work in NYC on worksites and is expected to attend in-person strategic and planning meetings as needed.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Evaluate Technically Complex Engineering Conditions:

  • Review and analyze complex engineering conditions, including building designs, energy systems, and
    operational procedures.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of existing conditions and identify areas for improvement.
  • Prepare detailed written reports summarizing findings, calculations, analyses, and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, architects, and stakeholders to develop and implement solutions.

2. Review Complex Project Designs:

  • Evaluate complex project designs by others, including building plans, specifications, and cost
    estimates.
  • Provide written reports with comments, analyses, and recommendations for improvements.
  • Ensure that designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Work with project teams to resolve design issues and ensure successful project outcomes.

3. Evaluate Existing & New Technologies:

  • Stay informed about the latest technologies and industry innovations related to school design and energy efficiency.
  • Evaluate the applicability of new technologies to school designs, considering factors such as location, maintenance needs, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Recommend new technologies that can improve the efficiency and sustainability of school buildings.

4. Examine Operating Procedures:

  • Review existing operating procedures and practices employed in school buildings.
  • Identify areas for improvement that can reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency.
  • Recommend changes to operating procedures to optimize energy performance.
  • Work with building operators to implement recommended changes.

5. Conduct Detailed Energy Assessments:

  • Conduct detailed energy assessments of school buildings to identify areas of high energy usage.
  • Analyze energy consumption data and identify opportunities for energy savings.
  • Develop and implement energy conservation measures to reduce energy consumption and costs.

6. Develop Energy-Related Proposals:

  • Develop energy-related proposals, including energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy projects, and energy management plans.
  • Prepare design and construction specifications for energy-related projects.
  • Develop standards and guidelines for energy efficiency in school buildings.

7. Review Energy Management Strategies:

  • Review current energy management strategies and associated greenhouse gas reduction plans.
  • Identify areas for improvement and develop recommendations for enhancing energy performance.
  • Work with stakeholders to implement energy management strategies and track progress.

8. Energy Modeling and Simulation Design:

  • Conduct energy modeling and simulation of school buildings to predict energy performance.
  • Use energy modeling tools to evaluate the impact of different design options and energy efficiency measures.
  • Optimize energy performance through the use of energy modeling and simulation.

9. Prepare Metering Plans:

  • Prepare sub-metering and advanced metering design plans for school buildings.
  • Install and maintain metering equipment to collect accurate energy consumption data.
  • Analyze metering data to identify trends and patterns in energy usage.

10. Measurement and Verification:

  • Conduct detailed measurement and verification of energy savings achieved through energy efficiency projects.
  • Analyze energy savings data and calculate the financial benefits of energy efficiency measures.
  • Process rebates and incentives from energy efficiency programs.

11. Review Energy Reports:

  • Review DCAS Energy and Local Law Reports for DOE sites and identify areas with high energy usage.
  • Propose solutions to repair and monitor high-energy usage areas.
  • Review measures implemented by DCAS for Clean Energy Generation with the respective Local Laws.
  • Propose strategies where applicable to DOE sites.

12. Demand Response & Load Management:

  • Conduct analysis of energy usage data using DCAS real-time metering.
  • Provide recommendations for immediate operational changes to reduce energy consumption.
  • Develop and implement demand response and load management strategies.

13. Focus on Maintenance Issues:

  • Focus on addressing maintenance issues for the worst-performing, most carbon-intensive buildings.
  • Increase Energy-Efficient Operations and Maintenance.
  • Ensure that building energy systems and equipment are installed as intended and properly maintained.

14. Identify Retro-commissioning Projects:

  • Identify Retro-commissioning projects to optimize energy systems and equipment performance.
  • Ensure that buildings are operating as efficiently as possible.

15. Energy Efficiency Retrofit Projects:

  • Identify Energy Efficiency Retrofit Projects to upgrade inefficient lighting, heating, cooling, and ventilation (HVAC) systems with more efficient technology.
  • Reduce energy consumption and improve the comfort of building occupants.

16. Energy Training & Strategic Planning:

  • Provide support to DOE staff and building operators to achieve their energy and emissions reduction goals.
  • Develop and deliver energy training programs.
  • Facilitate the development of energy strategic plans.

Qualifications:

To thrive in this role, you should meet the following qualifications. Preference given to individuals currently residing in New York City.

  • Must be licensed and registered in New York State as a Professional Engineer.
  • Must provide evidence of a minimum of eight (8) years of professional and responsible work in Engineering services., Certification as a QEWI may be substituted for up to two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • Must possess an excellent working knowledge of old and new building and construction systems, their effectiveness, and costs.
  • Thorough knowledge of building automation systems (BAS).
  • Must have excellent oral and written communications, client management and project management skills.
  • Must have experience with troubleshooting deficiencies in various components of buildings similar tothose owned by the NYCDOE.

Senior Mechanical Engineer (Full Time)

Job Description:

This role requires a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Engineer to provide maintenance and operations support for a major urban school district (District). The successful candidate will be instrumental in overseeing and managing a diverse range of projects, primarily focused on engineering, project management, and general engineering within the District’s extensive building portfolio.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

To excel in this role, you must perform the following responsibilities effectively, with the possibility of additional duties as assigned.

  • Provide expertise in engineering and possess a deep understanding of building systems, including boilers, chillers, lighting & lighting controls, HVAC systems, HVAC controls, cooling towers, heat pumps, pumps, motors, compressors, etc.
  • Knowledgeable with Local Law 11 regarding facade inspections, Local Law 152 on gas train inspections, BO9’s for boilers, NYC Building Code, NYC Fire Code, etc.
  • Comfortably work on-site in various locations, including mechanical rooms, attics, roofs, basements, etc. Conduct thorough on-site assessments, inspections, and audits to gather relevant project data. Ensure all engineering activities comply with relevant regulations and standards.
  • Analyze problems as assigned and design solutions for individual problematic conditions. Prepare reports, scopes of work and estimates of costs.
  • Under emergency conditions, survey building deficiencies and prepare reports for, and assist in remediating violations, as required.
  • Review engineering drawings and specifications that have been submitted by Contractors, and Architects who are proposing construction, for compliance with NYC codes and regulations, SCA & NYCDOE requirements and standards.
  • Provide engineering evaluations of various properties and building mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems.
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills to convey technical information to diverse stakeholders. Prepare comprehensive project reports, updates, and documentation. Foster a collaborative working relationship with client representatives and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Proven experience as a Senior Mechanical Engineer. Strong technical acumen and a deep understanding of building systems. Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the state of New York required. Certification as a QEWI preferred. Comfortable working on-site in various environments. Preference given to individuals currently residing in New York City or its boroughs.

Education/Experience:

  • Degree in engineering, construction management, facility management, energy management, or a related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of building science and energy-consuming building processes and equipment, including lighting systems, electrical systems, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, building automation systems (BAS), and energy distribution systems (chilled water, steam, and hot water). Ability to read architectural and mechanical drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent technical written and oral communication skills.

Energy Engineer Consultant

Job Description:

Energia is looking for competent, qualified energy performance development engineers to assist in the technical evaluation of energy performance contracting (EPC) proposals, ESCO interviews, Comprehensive Energy Audit reviews, field inspections, design, and/or Measurement and Verification on a project-by-project basis. Experience in the field of Energy Performance Contracting/work for an ESCO is ideal. This position would be on a 10-99 basis. Great opportunity for lucrative side work.

Required Experience:

Must have direct industry experience working with Energy Savings Performance Contracts (ESPCs), Energy Savings
Improvement Plan (ESIPs), Guaranteed Energy Savings Agreements (GESAs), etc.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science and/or Masters Degree in Engineering
  • PE, BEMP, CEM, CEA, or EIT Accreditation
  • Direct experience in the Energy Performance Contracting industry a plus
  • Strong working knowledge of the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocols (IPMVP)
  • Understanding of M&V plan development based on project scope & goals
  • Energy Auditing – ASHRAE Level I, II, and III
  • Experience in the energy field including energy efficiency, distributed energy generation, combined heat and power (cogeneration), energy project economics, utility rate analysis, renewable energy, HVAC, central heating and cooling plants
  • Experience calculating the associated energy savings in steam, hydronic, refrigeration, HVAC, lighting, turbines, air compressors, motors, and other commercial building systems
  • Knowledge of building and energy codes as well as energy standards in the Tri-State area
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
